Icarus and His Ocean

Disclaimer/Author's Note: I do not own Adam or Mason Eckhart of Mutant X. If I did, this would have actually happened! Also, I do not own Eagle Eye Cherry's song "Save Tonight". Anyway, I was bored in school this morning and suddenly realized I wanted to write a Mason/Adam slash. I mean, why not? It was rather fun for me to play with symbolism (however unintentional) and themes. This was written without intention to turn it into a longer story or give it a sequel, but the beauty of the last line is that it keeps that possibility open if I should ever want to. ;) Enjoy.

Two beautiful young men slept, entwined in each other's arms, awaiting the sunrise. They were tangled in the sheets, twisted too tightly so that they could not escape each other. If they wanted to. It was all just a matter of wanting.

One stirred, lifting a tousled head from off the muscled chest of his partner. Beautiful eyes, bright with mischief, twinkled. His tongue fell from his mouth, an Icarus too heavy to fly, and licked the surface of the ocean. Startled, the ocean bucked and writhed beneath his touch. The caress of certain failure is always the most intoxicating.

"You cannot continue to wake me up like that, Adam. One day it will surely get you in trouble." Mason rumbled, his already-low voice dropped an impressive half-octave.

Adam kissed where he had licked tenderly, smiling against the salty skin. "Maybe I want to get in trouble," he murmured into Mason's chest.

They lay like that, Icarus and his ocean, for what seemed like an eternity. They both knew that this was their last night together. Neither said anything. It had never needed to be said.

Icarus had tempted flight and brushed the sun; the ocean could not keep him once he fell. They would be separated, as is the natural order of things, but they would never forget what had been.

The corners of Mason's mouth twitched, finally, and he slid out from underneath Adam just a little too smoothly. Dressing quickly, he turned back to his lover.

Adam still sat naked in bed, his face made of stone, but his eyes filled with loss.

Mason shut his own eyes briefly. Striding back to the bedside, he cupped Adam's face in his hands and lifted it up to receive his own. Kissing him desperately, he caressed Adam's face with his lips, leaving searing memories where he had been.

Standing, he pulled Adam to his chest, dropped his face into Adam's thatch of unruly hair, and said goodbye.

"Save tonight," he whispered. "Save tonight, and fight the break of dawn."
