Summary: A morning and an evening spent in bed with Adam and Brennan. (sucky blurb, I know, but then, I suck at blurbs. *grin*)
*****
Adam woke warm and comfortable and smothered beneath something heavy. Thankfully, he was laying on his stomach and could breathe as his head was turned to the side. He'd discovered over the past couple of months that no matter what position they went to sleep in, Brennan always wound up wrapped around him by morning. Not that Adam was complaining, because he wasn't. There was something reassuring about the way Brennan clung to him, even if it was only in sleep.
Like right now, Brennan was lying almost full on top of Adam's back, one arm under Adam's head as a pillow and the other tucked around Adam's waist while their legs were entwined. He could feel the warm, moist air of Brennan breathing against the back of his neck. The only problem came when Adam had to be up early, which was most mornings. Brennan wasn't a morning person, but no matter how carefully Adam pulled out of his lover's arms, the younger man always woke.
Fortunately, today they could sleep in. Sleep being a relative term, of course, because Adam was awake and would remain so until they returned to bed late that night. But he was comfortable, lying between Brennan and the bed, and he could just stay in a nice drowsy state until the younger man woke. Which he was sure wouldn't be too much longer because they'd accidentally missed supper the night before.
Adam snorted in amusement at himself. Maybe it had something to do with the monk-like existence he'd been living for so long, but he couldn't seem to get enough of Brennan. Thankfully, Brennan seemed to be in the same state, because it didn't matter where they were. If Adam suddenly wanted him, Brennan was completely in synch. He shivered with want as he thought about the strong body covering his own with such careless strength.
Brennan stirred and pulled the covers over them, snuggling even closer as he pressed a sleepy kiss to Adam's shoulder and murmured, "You better not be getting sick."
Adam smiled and wiggled back against Brennan's semi-hard erection. "Don't feel sick."
Brennan groaned. "You're insatiable. I thought I was supposed to be the sex demon around here."
Chuckling, Adam squirmed around until they were face to face and he could see the sleepy warmth in Brennan's dark eyes. He thought for a moment then quoted, "Come and be Love's willing slave, for Love's slavery will save you. Forsake the slavery of this world and take up Love's sweet service."
Frowning, Brennan puzzled over the words for a long time then finally said, "I have no idea. Who is it?"
Grinning, Adam chided, "You really should expand your reading to encompass more than just the western world."
Rolling his eyes, Brennan said, "Yeah, yeah, so who was it?"
"Jalaluddin Rumi, 13th century Turkish poet who pretty much started a new spirituality," Adam informed him with a grin. "Your turn."
After thinking for several minutes, Brennan grinned then said, "Love me, love me, love me, say you do. Let me fly away with you. For my love is like the wind. And wild is the wind. Give me more than one caress. Satisfy this hungriness. Let the wind blow through your heart. For wild is the wind."
Adam frowned, running through the rather extensive selection of poetry he knew. Nothing. He was completely stumped. "I give up."
In answer, Brennan started to kiss him, slow and deep, before he started humming softly. Adam was drawn into the kiss almost completely before he realized what Brennan had done and pulled back, indignant. "Song lyrics?"
"Nina Simone, Wild is the Wind," Brennan confirmed.
"That's cheating!" Adam exclaimed.
Brennan rolled on top and looked down at him, exasperated. "If you didn't have the entire world's collection of poetry memorized, I wouldn't have to cheat now, would I?"
"I don't have them all memorized," Adam muttered, wrapping his legs around Brennan's thighs, pinning him in place.
Grinning unrepentantly, Brennan answered, "Close enough. Let's just say that I'm about to give you a crash course in classic jazz lyrics." Echoing the grin, Adam said, "I can think of something else I'd rather have a crash course in."
"Oh yeah?" Brennan murmured, lowering his head to capture Adam's lips in another leisurely kiss. The heat that perpetually simmered between them flared into being when Adam pressed up. God, he felt so good. Brennan was fully prepared to love this man senseless over the next couple of hours. He rocked against Adam, rubbing their cocks lightly together, and Adam gasped into his mouth.
"Adam."
Growling in irritation at Shalimar's audio interruption, Brennan pulled back and answered shortly, "He's busy, Shal."
"I'm sure he is, but this is important," Shalimar replied, humor evident in her voice.
"What is it, Shalimar? I'm here," Adam said, cupping his hand over Brennan's mouth to still further protests.
"We just received a distress signal from one of the safe houses," she reported.
Brennan instantly rolled off Adam and both men got to their feet as Adam replied, "We'll be right there."
They were dressed and out of Adam's bedroom in a few minutes, falling automatically into step with each other, despite the height difference. It wasn't long before they joined Shalimar and Jesse. "What's going on?"
"We got a coded message from Ashley that she barely escaped an attack on her safe house," Shalimar reported. "She wasn't sure if the others got out in time or not."
Adam's gut clenched at Ashley's name and he glanced briefly at Brennan before shoving the emotions down and asking, "Where is she now?"
"She's on her way to Box Car's, I told her we'd meet her there and bring her in," Shalimar answered.
Adam nodded. "Good. You and Jesse bring her back. Have we heard from Emma yet this morning?"
Jesse shook his head. "Not yet."
Frowning, Adam said, "She was due to check in already."
"Probably got caught up in the research," Shalimar said with a knowing grin.
Still frowning, Adam stated, "If she doesn't contact us in an hour, I'll send Brennan to check on her."
Leaning against the wall, Brennan said, "Sounds like a plan to me." Shalimar nodded and said, "We're out of here then. Call you when we get Ashley safe."
"Be careful," Adam cautioned.
She winked and linked her arm with Jesse's, pulling him towards the hanger. Adam watched them go then looked over at Brennan. "You okay with Ashley coming here?"
Dark eyes glanced at him with a flash of humor. "I'm just fine with her being here. Are you?"
Fine with the thought of the woman who had almost destroyed Brennan being within a hundred miles of him again? Fine with the woman who'd tried to seduce Brennan on sight just because of what she was? No chance. "Of course."
Brennan snorted and walked over to him, pulling him into a strong embrace. "You're such a liar."
Looking up into the younger man's eyes, Adam smiled ruefully. "I guess it's a good thing we don't play poker if you can read me so easily."
"I guess," Brennan agreed. He captured Adam's lips in a lingering kiss before continuing, "I'm with you now. You have nothing to worry about."
"Just because she's no longer mutating doesn't mean that the attraction won't be there," Adam said matter-of-factly. "You're both elementals, that hasn't changed."
Setting his large hands firmly on Adam's shoulders, Brennan repeated, "I'm with *you* now. You have nothing to worry about."
Adam forced himself to relax and smile. "I'm being foolish, aren't I?" Smiling indulgently, Brennan pulled him close for a hug. "Maybe a little."
"I missed this," Adam murmured after being wrapped in Brennan's arms for a few minutes.
Frowning, Brennan asked, "Missed what?"
"This. Touching, just because. Before you it was...a long time since I've had this," Adam admitted.
Brennan never liked to think of Adam being years without anyone to love him. It always depressed him that someone as brilliant and kind as the older man had had no one to hold and care for him. Even though it had worked out in his favor, Brennan would rather Adam have had someone to warm him on cold nights and make him laugh. "I'm sorry."
Adam looked up in surprise as he pulled back. "For what?"
Looking down into his lover's dark eyes, Brennan answered, "That you were so alone. I wish that you'd had someone to love you all that time, as much as I do now."
The smile this time was genuine as Adam murmured, "Just when I think I can't love you more, you prove me wrong."
Their lips met for a long, deep kiss, a sharing of strong emotions on both sides. It was Brennan who heard the polite throat clearing and pulled away from Adam abruptly. Looking over Adam's head, he found Emma smiling at them a short distance away. "Morning, Em."
"Morning guys. Having fun?"
Adam groaned and buried his face against Brennan's chest for a few seconds before pulling away and facing Emma. Waving his hands vaguely at Brennan and himself, Adam apologized, "Sorry about that but we..."
Wagging a finger at him, Emma interrupted, "Don't you dare apologize. As a matter of fact, the rest of us were just complaining that you two don't act nearly enough like a couple. I mean, Shal and I are always goofing around together in public."
"Yes, but..."
"No buts! Understood?" Emma demanded firmly.
Grinning, Brennan clamped a hand over Adam's mouth when his lover attempted another protest and agreed, "Understood."
Giggling lightly, Emma said, "Good. Where is everyone anyhow?"
"Jesse and Shalimar went to pick up Ashley at Box Car's. Her safe house was attack earlier this morning," Adam reported, moving into business mode.
Surprised, Emma asked, "Is everyone all right? Eckhart didn't get anyone, did he?"
"We're still trying to locate the others," Adam explained. "Or, we were about to when, you know."
Emma stifled the grin at Adam's unusual flushing, determined not to take advantage of his discomfort. It was a good thing Shal wasn't around, because her inherently mischievous nature would have no such compunctions. "Got it. Need some help?"
Relieved that she wasn't going to make any more comments, Adam nodded with a smile. "Of course." It was shortly after lunch that Shalimar, Jesse and Ashley arrived back at Sanctuary. Adam looked up as they entered the study and smiled in genuine relief that the young woman was unharmed. Whatever he felt about her personally, she had turned out to be one of their best agents and at least deserved his professional courtesy. "Ashley, I'm glad you're all right."
She smiled tightly and replied, "Me, too. Any word on the others?"
"They're all fine," he assured her. "Brennan, Emma and I tracked them all down."
At his report, Ashely relaxed and said, "Good. I was worried. I almost didn't escape and was afraid they'd been taken."
Motioning for her to sit, Adam asked, "What happened?"
Everyone sat and Adam only spared a second to miss Brennan at his side when the young man took a seat on the couch beside Jesse, before giving his full attention to Ashley and her tale.
"I woke up early this morning because I was going to do some gardening and wanted to get everything ready," Ashely began. "Well, early for me. Mara and Kenneth were in the kitchen eating when I woke up and Jack was puttering around in the basement with his computers. I had just reached the garage to get my tools when I saw Eckhart's goons pull up in the driveway. I hit the silent alarm and got in a good shot of electricity at their cars before taking off. As soon as I was safe, I called here."
"Did you see who the agent in charge was?" Adam asked.
Shaking her head, Ashley answered, "They were all just milling around after I lit up their cars."
Shalimar chuckled and Adam allowed himself a small smile. "I'm sure. Were there any mutants with them?"
"If there were, they didn't do anything to stop me," Ashley replied with a shrug.
Brennan frowned and said, "It's not like Eckhart to go after a safe house without some kind of mutant protection."
"Maybe he wasn't expecting anyone to be up. It was pretty early," Ashley suggested.
"Whatever the case, you're all safe now and we're already working on finding new placements for everyone," Adam said. "Why don't you get something to eat while we finish that up?"
Ashley nodded and replied, "I wouldn't say no to food."
"Good. Emma, why don't you bring Ashley to the kitchen?" Adam suggested.
Emma nodded and stood, motioning for the other woman to proceed her. Shalimar got up as well and followed the women out. Brennan leaned lazily against the wall and asked, "What's Eckhart up to? This whole thing is just not him."
Adam sighed and agreed, "I know. Unfortunately, we just don't have enough information to even guess at this point. C'mon. Help me find where to put them. Jesse? You coming?"
But Jesse was staring absently in the direction that the women took. He jumped a little at the direct question, replying, "No, I uh, I think I'm going to go get some lunch, too."
Adam watched him go with a hidden grin. Looking over at Brennan, he questioned, "When did Jesse suddenly become interested in Ashley?"
Snorting, Brennan stood and answered, "Who knows? This is Jesse, after all. This wind blows and..."
Eyes rolling slightly at the rude comment, Adam chided, "That wasn't very nice of you."
"But accurate, right?" Brennan pointed out with a grin. "Right?"
Shaking his head in amusement, Adam pushed Brennan in the opposite direction from the women and Jesse. The one thing he didn't need right now was a repeat of the last time Brennan and Ashley had shared the same space. He still wasn't sure how it had happened, but Ashley had managed to disperse and then absorb Brennan's molecules, taking his powers and abilities as her own. He still remembered the near- panic he'd been in when Brennan's book of poetry had been found without Brennan.
"Hey."
"Hm?" Adam looked over at the taller man curiously. "What?"
With a knowing smile, Brennan reported, "I'm fine, Adam. Ashley didn't seem the least bit interested in getting near me, let alone...getting near me."
Adam nodded, but was still unconvinced that things would be fine. The sooner that woman was out of their home, the better because with two polarized elementals in the new Sanctuary, anything could happen.
* * * *
In the deep of the night, with Adam held securely in his arms, Brennan could almost believe that they led a normal life. Adam's head was tucked under his chin and filled his arms perfectly, the strong body lying half on top of him. It didn't show often, but he felt his lover's age most on nights like tonight. After two long days of being chased around by Eckhart's goons, Adam had pretty much collapsed into bed.
The scientist had driven himself too hard to find a counter-measure to the newest weapon in Eckhart's arsenal. According to Emma, he'd gone without sleep and eaten very little while he was working. Which was, Brennan knew from experience, classic Adam behavior. And since he hadn't been around to bully the other man into taking care of himself, it had all hit Adam at once. Brennan had been forced to undress his lover almost like a sleep child, pulling off the sweater and slacks with very little help from Adam.
There was good news, though. Apparently, he and Ashley could work and fight side-by-side without any ill-effects to either of them. There was still a fascination about the woman, but it wasn't the same kind of compulsion Brennan had felt in their first meeting. Not that he would admit to any attraction to the woman in Adam's earshot, not a chance in hell. He was already uncertain enough in their relationship with her around as it was. Fortunately, Ashley was leaving in the morning to join a new safe-house and continue learning her powers and further a new line of research that Eckhart's newest toy opened up.
Sighing deeply, Brennan released some of the tension that had been gripping his muscles for the last forty-eight hours. It was good to hold Adam, but he longed to do so much more. There was no chance his lover would wake up any time before morning, though, so it was all he could do for now.
He tried to turn off his thoughts, but just couldn't manage it. Brennan shifted faintly and rolled his head to the side with a yawn. Maybe if he tried those breathing techniques that Emma was trying to get him to do?
Brennan yelped in surprise when Adam gripped him between the legs. Heart beating fast in surprise, he gasped, "Don't do that!"
Sleepily, Adam commented, "I thought you liked me touching you like that?"
"Not that, of course I like that...just...don't scare me like that."
"Ah. Brennan Mulray in the grips of deep thought," Adam teased through a yawn.
Rolling his eyes, though Adam couldn't see it in the dark, Brennan said, "You're supposed to be asleep until morning."
"Your sighing isn't very conducive to a sound sleep."
"Oh jeeze, Adam...I'm sorry," Brennan apologized instantly. "I'll go work through this somewhere else."
"Get out of this bed, Brennan, and I will personally make sure that not even Shalimar will be able to find your body."
Pursing his lips at the unexpected threat, Brennan replied, "Uh...okay?"
Adam suddenly pushed himself up and over Brennan, straddling his hips so their groins were touching.
Brennan swallowed a moan at the friction and stammered, "Wh-what are you doing?"
Rocking gently, Adam answered, "I should think that was pretty obvious."
A shudder rolled through Brennan and he swallowed convulsively. Adam leaned down and sucked his Adam's apple before licking up to his ear and nibbling on the juncture of his jaw and skull. Brennan shuddered again at the sensation and gasped, "God...do me, Adam, please?"
"Ever eloquent," Adam observed, his voice warm with love and laughter. "But you did tack a please at the end of it, so..."
Brennan reached above his head and gripped the metal headboard while Adam kissed his way down Brennan's throat and chest to suck hard at his nipple. The headboard was grounded and would disperse any energy that Brennan couldn't contain during his orgasm. They'd found that to be necessary the hard way when he'd sent Adam flying across the room accidentally, the third time they'd made love.
The older man didn't linger long at Brennan's nipple, moving further down his muscled stomach and then drawing pajama bottoms down to reveal a firm erection. Brennan's eyes closed just as his lover's mouth surrounded his cock. Groaning loudly, he ached to plunge his hands into the thick, soft hair and just hold Adam there so he could thrust at will. With no chance of that, he pushed up with his hips as well as possible, at least until Adam leaned on his hips, holding them down.
"Adam...please..." he complained.
But his lover's mouth was too busy sucking to form words. The hot, wet tightness was going to drive Brennan over the edge, which he needed after almost losing Adam to Eckhart's goons. Like always, Adam knew exactly what he did need and suddenly deep-throated him. Shouting was all Brennan could do, pinned down and stretched out as he was. Shouting and coming as the world faded away altogether.
When he finally came back to himself, Brennan found himself snuggled down in Adam's arms and sighed deeply in contentment, kissing the bare chest beneath him. Softly, he asked, "Do you need anything?"
Chuckling, Adam shook his head and answered, "I'm so tired that I doubt anything you could do would get me hard. And please, do not take that as a personal challenge."
Brennan laughed out loud. "Damn, you read my mind, lover."
Tightening his arms briefly, Adam murmured, "Love you, Brennan, let me fly away with you. My love is like the wind, and wild is the wind."
The happiness surging inside provoked a smile so big that Brennan thought his face might split in half. In response, he said, "I'll be Love's willing slave, Adam, always."
Their lips met in a slow, wet kiss, emotions high as their tongues moved lazily in each other's mouth. Brennan finally settled back down against Adam and sighed, "Love you, too, Adam. Good night."
Adam wordlessly kissed his temple and a short time later, Brennan heard the even breathing that signaled the other man was sound asleep. It wouldn't be long before he followed, but until then, he would hold his lover close and just listen to his precious heart beating.
