Adam walked slowly down the main hall of the wing that contained everyone's sleeping quarters. The only one who knew about his nightly patrol was Shalimar because she often did the same. They both needed to know that their loved ones were safe before being able to sleep.

The last month or so had been insane and it had been all Adam could do to keep himself from interfering. They might think him too wrapped up in other things to notice everything that had gone on, but it had actually been the opposite case. If he hadn't buried himself in work, he'd have jumped in and tried to solve the problem for them.

Unfortunately, matters of love, or even lust, could only be worked out by those directly involved. Adam knew this, but still he'd wanted to try and fix it. Thankfully, they'd all come to their senses before more feelings were hurt and possibly irreparable damage had been caused.

He paused in front of Brennan's open door and hesitantly peered inside. A grin surfaced at the empty bed within and he continued on his rounds. Maybe there was more going on than simple hormones after all. They'd spent the last week solid in the same bed, regardless of whose room it had been in. Adam mentally crossed his fingers.

Shalimar's door was open, but he didn't even bother to look inside, knowing that she would be in Emma's bed. That was an incredible relief to everyone. The girls...women, he corrected himself ruefully, had paired off fairly early on. For a while, it had looked as though Brennan and Shalimar were going to get together, and Adam still wasn't what had happened to stop it, but again, he'd stayed firmly out of the matter.

So much of that first year had been spent figuring out everyone's place in the group that Adam wasn't surprised no unions had come of it. Then, after Zach's stormy entrance and even more virulent departure from Shalimar's life, things had been very up in the air. He'd been a little worried that her hook up with Emma had been a rebound situation, but if they'd survived the last week, then honest feelings were involved, for which he was grateful.

He was also jealous, if he as going to be honest about it. Not a destructive jealousy, more like a wistful envy that there was no one for himself.

Smiling fondly at Emma's closed door, Adam kept walking towards his own bed at last. He had all of their love, after all, and counted himself blessed by it. They were family now, and if he grew a little lonely at times, all he had to do was remember the sterile existence he'd led before MutantX. That reminded him easily enough just how lucky he truly was.
